Experience
I have taught all aspects of 11-18 science very successfully in secondary schools for 36 years, working as Head of Biology and Head of Science. I have enjoyed helping dozens of students as a one-to-one tutor in A-level biology and IGCSE and GCSE sciences since 1987. In all that time I have learned a great deal about good teaching and good learning.More
As an expert online science tutor, I will guide you in building up your understanding of science, so that you make your own sensible "story" rather than feeling you are carrying a collection of random, unrelated facts. I will tailor individualised support for you, whether you need a full rescue package, want a bit more confidence in exams or intend to sharpen your performance for your medical school applications.Exams don't have to be a trial. I will coach you in exam techniques so that you understand what a question is asking you to do, and can tackle it with real confidence. In our lessons, most of the talking should be yours: explaining something for yourself is a powerful and effective way to learn. I'm still surprised at how much laughter there is, too! Good tuition is good value for money. Every session with me is planned to bring a solid, identifiable gain in your performance.
Here are some comments from my previous students:
Parent of Y10 student, 2019: "Mike is a brilliant tutor. He is helping with our daughter's GCSE chemistry. He has a lifted the fog on many of the topics she's been struggling with and she got great results in year 10 mock exams. The sessions with Mike are very informal and student participation plays a big part. Our daughters confidence in the subject has grown significantly and we'll continue with more lessons in year 11."
Parent of Y10 student, 2019: "Mike helped my son some GCSE chemistry topics that he had not understood in class. Mike immediately grasped what kind of support he needed and how to get through to him. Mike is clearly hugely experienced and has a wealth of practice material to draw on. He ended up doing better in his chemistry end of year exam than his other sciences even though before it had been the weakest of the three. We will definitely be asking Mike to help over the next two years with all his sciences. Thank you Mike!"
Parent of Y13 student, 2019: "Michael is an excellent tutor. He calmed everyone down and really focused in on the important stuff at a stressful time. He's highly organised and efficient and an extremely knowledgable and competent teacher."
Parent of student retaking Y11, 2018: "I would like to say thank you. Your no-nonsense and straight talking approach worked well with my son. You also took note of his interests and were able to use that information when explaining topics he did not understand which really helped. You very quickly assessed his strengths and weaknesses and how to get him to work effectively. You gave him the confidence to sit the exams and achieve. We would not hesitate to recommend you to anybody feeling their children needed support and tutoring in their study of science."
Year 13 student, 2018: “Mike really helped me with focusing in on exam technique for biology. I learnt how to properly answer the questions and my marks very noticeably increased. On top of which, he is a very friendly and approachable teacher!”
